Worked backwards from the job, not forwards from the marks. Every course scored on what it actually pays and where it lets you sit.

Where this landed

The target
Dad's firm is commercial construction — Durban HQ, projects in Joburg and Cape Town. The seats worth having: Contracts Manager · Operations Manager · Project Planner · Site Manager · Estimator.
The wall
Maths Literacy 59%. Level 4. A large part of this list wants level 5 (60%). One percentage point — and the rewrite window closed in March, so it is permanent.
What it shuts
Operations Management at UJ and TUT — both want ML 60%. DUT is the only university in the country that will take you for it.
Also shut
Construction Management anywhere — every institution wants pure Maths and Physical Science. That's the direct route to all five jobs, closed by two subjects rather than one percent.
So
Operations Management and Project Management are the two routes that are open into that exact work. The top three is built from availability, not preference — which is also why it survives Dad asking "is this what you actually like".
One unknown
Whether the UJ Higher Certificate progresses into UJ Operations Management. Yes → UJ is first choice. No → DUT is. One phone call decides it.

The three — final

One Durban, one Joburg, one drivable. Entry verified on all three — none of these can bounce you.
1
DUT · Durban · 3 years · guaranteed entry
Diploma: Operations Management
↳ The only qualification here that reaches all five roles, and all five are construction. Highest ceiling on the board — Contracts Manager, R1.10M average. DUT is the only university that will take you for it. Durban is home: family there, Dad's HQ there.
✓ first choice
2
UJ · Auckland Park Bunting Road · 1 year · free to apply
Higher Certificate: Business Management (Project Management)
↳ Your number-one university, your current city, Bunting Rd not Soweto. Leads to Project Planner. Its real value is the ladder — finish it and UJ assesses you on university results instead of matric results. The only thing on this list that can undo the 59%.
✓ the key
3
TUT · Pretoria · 3 years · drivable from Joburg
Diploma: Supply Chain Management
↳ The highest-paying option outside DUT — Supply Chain Manager R991k. In construction, procurement is where the margin is protected or lost. No relocation. The hedge if the first two don't land.

The decision rule — don't pick, call

If UJ confirms the certificate progresses into their Operations Management → UJ is first choice: your course, your university, your city. If they say no → DUT, and you've lost four minutes. The answer lands well before 30 September either way.

"My marks are APS 26, English 55%, Maths Literacy 59%, no Maths or Physical Science.

If I complete the Higher Certificate in Business Management, Project Management, at Bunting Road — would I then be considered for a UJ diploma on my certificate results instead of my matric results? And specifically, would that make me eligible for the Diploma in Operations Management under the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment? My Maths Lit is 59% against their published 60%."

If the call centre can't rule on it, ask to be put through to the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment — they own that programme. Write down who you spoke to and the date.

Reading it straight. Highest single ceiling: A — nothing beats Contracts Manager. Highest blended average: F, but by ~R45k, which is inside the noise, so call A and F tied on money. Most roles, and the only one where every role is in Dad's industry: A.
Caveat that matters: figures are ERI/SalaryExpert where possible so they're comparable, but supply-chain sources ranged R398k–R991k depending on methodology. Treat the ordering as reliable and the absolute numbers as rough.

The jobs — what they are and what they pay

South Africa, 2026. Contracts Manager and Operations Manager are not entry roles — you arrive after roughly 5–10 years, usually through Site Manager.
RoleWhat it isEntryAverageSenior 8+
Contracts Manager Sits above the sites, runs several at once, owns the budget and the client relationship R776kR1.10MR1.38M
Operations Manager Runs delivery across every project — labour, plant, productivity, sequencing R649kR915kR1.15M
Construction Project Mgr Owns one project end to end: scope, programme, budget, client R607kR863kR1.08M
Project Planner Builds the programme in Primavera P6 — critical path, sequencing, who does what when. The most AI-adjacent seat here. R432kR610kR764k
Site Manager Runs one site day to day: crews, subcontractors, quality, safety. Where most people start R190kR579kR800k
Estimator Prices the bid before the job is won. A won tender is worth millions — the highest-leverage judgement in the firm. R369kR516kR593k
Supply Chain Mgr Materials and subcontractor flow — where construction margin actually leaks ~R325kR991k
Estimator is NOT a Quantity Surveyor — the mix-up that nearly cost this one. A QS measures and values work after the job is won, and is a regulated profession requiring a QS qualification (closed to you). An Estimator prices the bid before it's won, works contractor-side, and needs no registration — you enter from Operations Management or site experience. Same numeracy, completely different door.

The ladders — every route up

Nothing here is a dead end. The only question is which ladder is designed and which is improvised.
The one that undoes the 59%
Higher Certificate → UJ Diploma
Higher Cert1 yr · UJ Bunting Rd
UJ Diploma3 yrs · on uni results
Advanced Dip+1 yr · degree level
Reliable. UJ's own Academic Regulations carry formal Higher Certificate → Diploma → Degree progression, plus Senate Discretionary admission. A completed HC is a finished qualification, so the progression rule genuinely applies — that is what Higher Certificates are for. Unconfirmed: whether it reaches Operations Management specifically, since that sits in Engineering. That's the phone call.
1 call away
Any completed qualification, any institution
Diploma → Advanced Diploma → Postgrad
Diploma3 yrs
Advanced Dip+1 yr · degree level
Postgrad Dip+1 yr
Reliable. Every diploma here extends to degree level with roughly one extra year. This ladder is general across South African institutions — not a UJ-only mechanism.
✓ open
The tempting one that isn't reliable
One year at DUT → transfer to UJ
Case-by-case, and weak. Incomplete study makes you a transfer applicant, not a progression candidate — some institutions consider it, some send you back to your matric marks. You'd also have moved to Durban to do it and then moved back. The Higher Certificate does the same job properly, in the city you already live in, with a completed qualification behind it.

Blocked — so you can stop wondering

Construction Management — every institution
Needs pure Mathematics AND Physical Science. UJ BSc Construction: APS 30, Maths L5, Phys Sci L5. DUT built environment: Maths L4, Phys Sci L4. You have neither subject. This is the direct route to all five jobs and it is permanently closed — by two subjects, not one percent.
Operations Management — UJ and TUT
Both require Maths Literacy level 5 (60%). You have 59%. UJ's APS bar is 22 and you have 26 — you clear it by four points and fail on the single subject. DUT is the only route.
Quantity Surveyor
Regulated profession — needs a dedicated QS qualification. The highest-status commercial role in SA construction, and none of these seven reach it. Worth knowing now rather than in 2029.
The matric rewrite — both levers
Nov-2026 NSC part-time registration closed 13 March 2026; May/June closed 6 February. ML 59→60 and English 55→60 are both shut for the 2027 intake. Stop treating them as levers.
UJ College of Business & Economics diplomas — unverified
APS 26 clears the whole CBE range (bars are 21–26 with Maths Lit). What's unconfirmed is the per-subject level — sources disagree on ML 4 vs 5. Only matters as a fallback if the certificate progression answer comes back no. Logistics · Transportation Mgmt · Business IT · Financial Services Ops · Retail Business Mgmt.
UNISA Diploma: Operations Management
Distance learning — studied from Joburg with no relocation. Worth checking whether their entry accepts ML level 4. Not chased yet.

No aggregators, no phone agents, no assumptions. Zero unconfirmed items.
Three TUT choices carry auto-admit wording — "applicants with a final APS of 24 and more will be admitted" — and you have 26.
DUT has no long shot because your first choice there is already guaranteed — that is the entire point of it.
Dodged along the way: TUT Administrative Management (no new intakes for 2027) and the legacy TUT Supply Chain diploma (last intake 2025). Both would have been rejections nobody explained.
Ranked choice order — this is what you type into each portal

Put the long shot first every time. You are never penalised for aiming high on choice one, and the choice below it catches you.

The highest-paying and the best-fitting are the same at #1 — and diverge immediately after. HR Manager (R1.046M) out-earns Supply Chain Manager (R991k) but has nothing to do with operations, procurement, data or construction. If you ranked purely on money you would have put HR second. Don't.
Widest spread warning: PayScale puts HR Manager at R431k where SalaryExpert says R1.046M — a 2.4× disagreement. The certificate-level rows are my estimates, not sourced figures.

the seat worth having
Contracts Manager
↳ You run several building sites at once. Each morning: what is late, what is over budget, who is blocked. You phone the client when there is a problem. You decide where the money, the machines and the people go this week. You never lay a brick — you decide what gets built when, and you answer for whether the job made money. R776k entry → R1.10M average → R1.38M senior.

Inside a job vs owning the thing

Your locked position is "be irreplaceable in your name, dispensable in your companies." That makes this the section that actually matters, because the two courses split cleanly on it.

Supply Chain has a business model built into it. Operations doesn't.

Supply chain
IS a transaction. Buy at one price, sell at another, keep the difference. That is a complete business on day one — R5,000 and a phone. No premises, no staff, no licence.
Operations
A skill for running a business you already have. It makes you better at executing once something exists. It does not generate the thing. There is no "I'll do one operations deal this weekend."
The asymmetry
That single difference is the whole answer, and everything below follows from it.
four things supply chain gives you that operations can't
Why procurement is the owner's route
1 · A supplier network — the hardest asset in trading to build and impossible to buy. Three years of study plus any work experience hands it to you.
2 · Your dad's firm is a BUYER. Construction buys constantly — steel, concrete, formwork, plant hire. Understand procurement and you can become a supplier to construction, with a warm first customer. That is the warm-access play your own notes say is the only thing that has ever worked for you.
3 · Price knowledge is directly monetisable. Knowing what things really cost and who sells cheapest isn't background to the business — it IS the business.
4 · It is where the data lives for what you're building. Your named AI products are tender pricing and cost-overrun intelligence. Procurement holds supplier rates, historical spend, quote-versus-delivery. Operations sees the schedule; procurement sees the money.
non-linear
Operations ManagementSupply Chain
Inside a jobContracts Manager R1.10M — wins by ~R110kSupply Chain Manager R991k
Outside a jobconsulting = linear (your hours) · owning a contractor = capital, plant, licences, bondingtrading/distribution — uncapped, near-zero startup, margin scales without you working proportionally harder
Verdictbetter employee ceilingbetter owner ceiling
The inside-a-job figures are sourced. The outside-a-job comparison is reasoning, not researched data — treat it as an argument, not a fact.
Operations wins slightly inside a job. Supply Chain wins massively outside one. By your own stated goal — own, don't be employed — supply chain is the better qualification, and your instinct said so before you had the reasoning.
the frame that resolves it
The diploma is not the earning vehicle. It's the domain access.
↳ You can't build tender-pricing software if you've never seen a tender priced. You can't sell cost-overrun tracking to a construction owner if you don't speak the language. The qualification puts you in the room where those decisions are made — and the people in that room become your first customers.

So it isn't "job OR own company". It's: use the job to buy what money can't — domain, network, credibility — and build the thing that scales while you're in there. Contracts Manager at R1.1M isn't the destination. It's a well-paid seat with a perfect view of the problem you intend to sell the solution to.
